Rotterdam: Print Your City!.
In the project Print Your City!, Rotterdam residents upcycle their plastic waste into their public space with the use of robotic 3D printing. In this way Rotterdam uses citizen involvement to become more circular!Omschrijving
Print Your City! demonstrates how cities are the perfect environment to facilitate large, long-term, and easy to re-process applications for recycled plastic. The project transforms household plastic waste produced in the city into functional objects for public use via robotic 3D printing.Print Your City! is a community driven project that engages Rotterdam’s citizens in two ways:
• Citizens collect (waste) plastic materials, thereby increasing recycling rates
• Citizens are involved in the design of products for public use that fit the needs of the community
We promote sustainable practices and citizen engagement by directly making the Rotterdam citizens part of the process in transforming plastic waste into objects for public use. This circular city strategy boosts the local economy by locally sourcing materials and locally producing goods.
Sociale relevantie
Print Your City! transforms a problem (Rotterdam’s plastic waste) into a resource for improving the quality of life of its citizens by creating beautiful and functional items for public use. Examples of this include: public bench, bike racks, recycling bin, items used in playgrounds, and tree plants.Innovatie
Print Your City! promotes the principles of the circular economy by driving civic engagement and combining it with the latest technology in design.Robotic 3D printing is an ideal format for recycling plastic waste because it enables a short recycling path and a zero waste production process when transforming plastic waste into new products. If the proposed solution is applied in a large scale within the Netherlands, it can reduce plastic waste up to 40% and achieve a circular city
